Aside from its rich history, Chinese silk painting boasts an exquisite aesthetic that makes it an exceptionally timeless craft. In fact, in the 17th century, even Western artists have begun incorporating it into their own masterpieces. This eventually brought about the birth of Chinoiserie, an art style that depicts European interpretations of Chinese artistic traditions. Diane Hill is one of the many artists who continue to promote this 18th-century style through her enchanting silk watercolor paintings.

The London-based artist’s interest in this style started with her fascination with Chinoiserie wallpapers, particularly their vibrant patterns and scenic storytelling. During a trip to China, she had the opportunity to learn more about traditional watercolor painting on silk paper. Taking inspiration from historical reference books and combining them with a variety of art techniques, she has now developed a distinct style that’s uniquely her own.

“I pay meticulous attention to achieving beautiful blended gradients which give my paintings a sense of depth, as well as ultra fine details using precision brushes.”

From ethereal landscapes to enchanting still life scenes of fruits and flowers, Hill’s silk watercolor paintings showcase the delicate beauty of nature

Combining soft yet precise brush strokes with pastel hues, her pieces certainly make a charming addition to any space. Although she used to take on large-scale projects such as hand-painted murals for commercial and residential interior designs, her bespoke painting service is unfortunately no longer available.

Luckily, her hand-painted designs are still available on a wide range of products, including wallpapers, art prints, and phone cases. All these are available for purchase on her website.
