Unlike dogs and cats, squirrels are not exactly the top choice for house pets. In fact, some people even perceive them as pests, much like other types of rodents. Without a doubt, they’re experts in sneaking in places, stealing seeds off of your bird feeder and even chewing on cables. Even so, we love these adorable squirrels!
Apparently, not everyone hates these creatures. As a matter of fact, there’s even a National Squirrel Appreciation Day which is celebrated annually every January 21st. So, this only goes to show that these little fellas have earned themselves some dedicated supporters as well.

Squirrels are generally small animals, with newborn ones typically just about 2.54 centimetres long. The smallest species of which is the African pygmy squirrel at only 10–14 centimetres in total length and 12–26 grams in weight. However, there are also several marmot species that can weigh up to 8 kilograms or more.

By now, you should probably know that these furry creatures are intelligent ones. And they can do so much more than just evading your bait and escaping your traps. In fact, these tiny mammals are also famous for their deceptive caching techniques. More often than not, they dig holes only to cover them up again—without actually burying their stash in them. Apparently, they do this to throw off potential food thieves.

Unfortunately, some species are scatter-hoarders with multiple caches of food in different places. As such, they can have a hard time keeping track of all their food stock, more so remembering them all. So, they tend to lose about 25% of their buried food to thieves. And in most cases, these thieves just happen to be their fellow squirrels.

Just like other rodents, their four front teeth never stop growing as well. This explains their need to gnaw to keep their teeth at the right length. Similarly, this is also why their teeth don’t wear down despite the constant crunching. Even with their long teeth these are still adorable squirrels!
