There’s just something about dragons that is so fascinating. Maybe it’s their ability to fly and breathe fire. Some cultures even associate them with good fortune. However, they are just mythical creatures that exist only in folklore, fairytales and fantasy films. That is why seeing one in real life would be a remarkable experience.

That was the case for the people of Calais in France who were lucky enough to witness one roaming around their streets. Well, it’s actually not a real dragon, but it’s as mystical as the real thing. Dubbed the Dragon of Calais, this mechanical fire-breathing beast was created by La Machine. La Machine is a street theater company that takes pride in building and creating live productions.

Among their latest and largest creations to date is this massive dragon consisting of carved wood and steel. It measures 25 meters long and comes with articulated limbs and a snout that releases smoke. It’s so immense that it requires 17 people to operate it and bring it to life. Earlier this month, the beast paraded all over the city for three consecutive days, from November 1st to 3rd, as part of an arts festival.

“The Dragon of Calais is fire, air, earth and water… he has always watched over the lands and seas of the north. Dragons only appear to humans in situations of extreme need, to settle a conflict or to allay an evil. They are naturally benevolent but can also be wild and unpredictable.”

The majestic creature currently sits on the newly renovated Seafront at La Cité Provisoire. From December 17th onwards, the public can enjoy carriage rides on the back of the dragon à la Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones.
