90’s Kids Nostalgia – 3D Doritos Are Making A Come Back

Don’t you just love it when brands bring back something they decided to discontinue? This is especially true for childhood snacks. Kids from the 90’s can definitely relate, as we’ve seen plenty of our favorite sips and bites disappear from shelves indefinitely over the years. So it’s always a major moment when something reappears – the Dunkaroos’ comeback was definitely a big 2020 event. And now, Frito-Lay is getting on the nostalgic trend because they’re bringing back the 3D Doritos!

The 3D snack first came out in 1999. And in true 90’s Doritos fashion the snack was introduced with a commercial starring Sean Hayes and Ali Landry. In the commercial, Sean and Ali had a ‘who-can-catch-these-3D-Doritos-better’ contest inside a laundromat. The quirky commercial definitely had us wanting to try the chip-catching tricks with the unusual Doritos! Sadly, Frito-Lay cut the fun short when they decided to pull the product from shelves in the early 2000s. The company didn’t exactly offer an explanation, but insiders claim that Frito-Lay decided to flatten the Doritos due to low sales. That may or may not have been the case. But we’ve got a feeling that it won’t be anymore!

The 3D Doritos offered a whole new snacking experience

No snack stash can ever be complete without a bag of Doritos. And while the flat and triangular chips make great snacks, the 3D version was on an entirely different level. The chips were puffed up and had a hollow center. This form surely made the snacking experience more exciting because you got twice the crunch with every chip! The 3D snack was offered in a variety of flavors such as Jalapeño, Nacho Cheese and Zesty Ranch.

Then, several years after discontinuing the line, Frito-Lay made an attempt to offer us a ‘new’ version called Jacked 3D in 2015. Some snackers were delighted, but this still left many craving for the 90s’ offering. In fact, the company reported that the 3D line has consistently been the most requested product for Frito-Lay for some time! Well, the efforts of the 3D fans are finally paying off because it’s officially coming back!

The 3D snack is back by popular demand

Doritos snackers on Instagram and Reddit have been talking about the return for several weeks before Frito-Lay actually got around to confirming the news. According to sources, we can expect the snack to re-hit the shelves on December 28th, 2020. They also added that we’ll get to enjoy the snack in two flavors: Chili Cheese and Spicy Ranch! Clearly Frito-Lay is spicing things for 2021!

Instagram food blogger @Markie_devo has already managed to snag a sneak peak of the snack thanks to a friend who works at a Frito-Lay factory. The chips will be available in both big and small bags, just like before. But we’ll have to taste for ourselves if the Doritos indeed pack that crunch from the past that we so crave. One thing is for sure though: it’s time to get ready for some nostalgic snacking!
