Contemporary architecture and urban design can offer a way to bring us back to nature with numerous benefits. Mumbai-based architectural firm Sanjay Puri Architects is centered on evolving design solutions that integrate sustainability and assimilate climate in cohesive way. Their latest project is a university building featuring a large green roof. The landscaped rooftop should provide a pleasing outdoor space for students to relax and reconnect with nature. Furthermore, it offers a natural ambiance to help engage students holistically and foster social interaction.
Located within the 100-acre Prestige University in Indore, India, the building features modular squares of green roof that gradually steps up from the ground level to 63 feet up. Each square is inlaid with natural lawn grass and the entire rooftop is punctuated by courtyards with lush trees. Indoor pathways and corridors are furnished with air holes and the building façade is draped with screen wall.

These architectural elements allow natural ventilation and natural lighting inside the structure. Additionally, the trees on the courtyards and the grass on the rooftop help reduce heat to keep the building cool in response to the hot climate of the city especially during summer.
“The building will imbibe from traditional Indian architecture to create an energy-efficient, sustainable building with minimal dependence on artificial lighting and air conditioning,” the designers explain.
The accessible green roof steps up 4 levels. Situated on the ground floor are the main administration offices, an auditorium, and a cafeteria. On the second level, the architects placed the library and seminar halls. The upper levels include the classrooms and administration spaces to form the functions of the building. The new academic building is slated for completion in June 2022.
