People tend to think spiders are creepy. And while it’s true that their scary looks can be stuff of nightmares, we can’t also deny the fact that we also find them fascinating. Hungarian designer Peter Szucsy takes inspiration from these transfixing arachnids in creating intricate steampunk spider sculptures using old watches. We’ve got to admit that we’re not the biggest fan of these creepy crawlers ourselves. But these cyborg spiders look so cool, we can’t take our eyes off them.

For someone who has worked in the game development industry for 25 years, Szucsy has created many creatures and monsters in the virtual world. Then one day, he decided to bring his creations to life, not into the virtual world but into the real world. Instead of using his computer to create fantastical creatures, he started collecting antique watches from flea markets, takes the pieces apart and uses them to craft steampunk spider sculptures.

He carefully takes apart the parts of vintage watches – cogs, mechanism, faces, springs, hands, crowns, and more. And meticulously puts them together to create steampunk spider sculptures with amazing details. Szucsy has made around 300 pieces so far and he plans to create more of these retro-futuristic pieces. But here’s the good part, all his creations are up for sale in case you’re interested to bring these metal minibeasts into your home.

Luckily for us, these cyborg arachnids don’t crawl or move like the real thing. They just sit there letting you gaze at or touch them to your heart’s content. If you’re scared of spiders, watching these realistic replica up close might help you overcome your fear of arachnids. Head over to Szucsy’s online shop to see what’s available or you can follow the artist on Instagram to keep updated with his latest creations.
