Sculptor Ben Young Shares Creates Beautiful Glass And Concrete Sculptures That Capture The Beauty Of The Ocean

Everybody knows that the sight and sound of the sea create a sense of calm that allows us to go into a meditative state. Despite the myriad of stress management therapeutic tools available today, many of us still turn to the tranquil water of the beach or lake to alleviate stress and heal our brains. New Zealand-based artist Ben Young captures the soothing charm of the ocean and other bodies of water through his mesmerizing aquatic glass sculptures.

Heavily inspired by marine landscapes, Young recreates the grandness of sea using a combination of glass and concrete materials. He recreates the clear blue water by handcrafting from clear sheet float glass which is then laminated layer upon layer. The sculptural process starts with the construction of models, making custom jigs, and cutting the layers with a glazier’s hand tool. He juxtaposes the translucent glass form of the water with concrete that depicts the seabed, islands, or mountains. The final form features a compelling slice of organic topography represented in cubic shape and cross-sections.

In many of his works, Young also adds figurative elements such as boats, lighthouses, palm trees, and human figures which are handcrafted from steel and bronze. These elements help create a personal entry point for the viewers, allowing them to compare the minuscule representation of humanity with the greatness of the sea.

His evocative glass sculptures come to life when lit from beneath. Hence, lighting plays a huge part in the presentation of the dramatic waterscapes. As light reflects in the piece, it gives the illusion of space, movement, and depth that transport the senses to the realm of total relaxation.
