Decorating for Halloween doesn’t need to be expensive. All it takes is just a bit of creativity coupled with resourcefulness and a few household items. For starters, we’ve found a great way to repurpose those old glass jars that are taking up space in your kitchen cabinets. Apparently, creative crafters are turning them into cemetery-inspired terrariums or cemeterrariums for a spooky twist.

If you’re fond of plants, then this DIY project is perfect for you! Terrariums are generally low maintenance, so it’s not a problem even if you think you’re not blessed with a green thumb. Besides, you can always stick to artificial plants to ensure that they will last forever. Keep scrolling down to see how people are adding a creepy touch to these charming glass planters! Here are a few fun ones that we’ve spotted on Instagram:

Similar to building a typical terrarium, you’ll first need a glass container. It can be an old jar, a fishbowl, or a small aquarium. You can also use a plastic container as long as it’s clear and transparent. Just keep in mind to choose a container with a wide mouth. That way, it would be easy for you to fill it with soil, plants, and other decorative elements.

If you’re using real plants, be sure to add some drainage layers as terrariums don’t have drainage holes. You can start with a layer of gravel or crushed stones at the bottom then top it off with a layer of activated charcoal. Afterward, you can start adding a layer of sheet moss followed by a layer of potting mix.

Finally, add the plants and secure them firmly into the potting medium. Popular plant choices for terrariums include air plants, ferns, and succulents. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the care tips for your plants of choice to keep them thriving optimally.

And now for the fun part, it’s time to go all out in decorating your cemeterrarium to give it an eerie appeal! You can stick with miniature jack-o-lanterns for a subtle Halloween vibe. But of course, you can always go the sinister route with mini tombstones, skulls, skeletons, and even grim reaper figurines. The possibilities are endless!
