Apart from knitting and crocheting, traditional loom weaving is another popular method of textile production by interlocking or interlacing sets of yarns. While these hand-weaving techniques are the antithesis of fast fashion production, these handicrafts aren’t only limited to fabric production. They have also evolved into a distinct form of art on their own. Embroidery art and other needle painting techniques have allowed artists to create stunning portraits using yarns as their paints and needle as their paintbrush. Chicago-based artist Adrienne Lee takes loom weaving to create exquisite paintings of idyllic landscapes in her series called Painted Sky Textiles.
Adopting the fundamental practice of interlacing yarns in perpendicular directions using a loom, Lee renders each illustration with a variety of vibrant colors and textures to recreate scenes inspired by tranquil environments. As the name of her series implies, the Painted Sky Textiles features delicate candy-colored skies overlooking scenic landscapes of lush fields, serene seas, and breathtaking mountainscapes.

Lee plays with visual depth to give her lovely handwoven art a three-dimensional rendition that can be seen and felt. Aside from employing different weaving techniques, she also uses a combination of thick and fine yarns to portray the elements. Thick strands make up the billowing clouds against the sunset sky, thin strands mimic the look of grass and leaves, and hanging strands depict flowing gentle water from seas, rivers, and lakes.
