Thanks to modern technology, accessing information is now easier and faster more than ever. But, as we all know, too much of everything can be harmful as well. Indeed, mindlessly exposing ourselves to tons of information online can also bring about stress and anxiety. And while doing a digital detox can help take our minds off things, nothing still beats having a physical space where you can isolate yourself in peace. Well, the Sensory Deprivation Skull offers exactly just that.

Designed by Dutch artist and sculptor Joep Van Lieshout, this unique chair comes in the form of the human cranium. Made of fiberglass, it features two doors that open outward, inviting you to step inside and temporarily shut yourself off from the world. The seat inside is lined with a sheepskin cushion, offering a cozy refuge from the chaotic world outside.

As the name suggests, this avant-garde furniture piece encourages you to deprive your senses and free yourself from external distractions. Apparently, multiple studies have shown that sensory deprivation can potentially help ease anxiety, relax muscles, and make a person feel rejuvenated overall. In addition, other studies have suggested that minimal to zero exposure to external stimuli can also help boost creativity.

Indeed, there’s no better way to represent isolation and mindfulness than with the human skull. After all, it’s likely the only place where you can be truly alone. Likewise, as you disconnect yourself from the outside world, it’s only then that you’ll be able to finally reconnect with your inner self. This one-of-a-kind chair certainly presents an unusual yet interesting concept on relaxation.

In addition to the isolation chair, the artist has also designed another piece that takes inspiration from the human cranium. The Wellness Skull features a bath in its neck and a sauna in its cranium. Although it primarily depicts the “complexity and beauty of the human body,” it also invites people to reflect on their obsession with youthfulness and self-indulgences.
