Art is a diverse range of human activities but little did we know that a fitness tracking app would be used to create simple yet impressive artworks. Australian cyclist Pete Stokes creates amazing Strava drawings by taking advantage of the popular fitness activity tracker to draw a sketch. While the exercise app isn’t designed to create art, many people who are using it were able to ‘unlock’ the app’s new potential in making elaborate sketches. And Adelaide-based design generalist and cyclist Stokes was one of them.

Strava allows cyclists and runners to map and record their route by combining the power of GPS and internet service. Through the app, users can view the paths they’ve traversed which were represented by orange lines sketched out on a map. Stokes realized that he can draw almost anything on the map by using the app to trace his GPS paths. And that’s how his series of digital drawings took off and became popular on social media.

The 45-year-old cyclist rides trails in Adelaide, biking hundreds of miles to sketch detailed drawings using the Strava app. Some of his most impressive works include the winged dragon that he sketched on a 3-day mountain bike hike through Northeast Tasmania and his rendition of Nirvana’s Nevermind album cover. Follow the cyclist on Instagram to see his awesome collection of digital drawings.
