This Artist Blends Their Art With Everyday Things In The Street

In its original sense, vandalism is an act involving intentional defacement to public and private property without permission of the owner. But over the course of time, the act itself has taken a different essence. Many street artists are now using graffiti, not to destroy properties, but to enhance them. Although some graffiti artists choose to do their works legally by asking permission first, there are still those who prefer to do it the old way – drawing graffiti on a property without permission.

French artist Cal can find the ideal canvas almost anywhere. From wall cracks and pipes to trash bags and fallen leaves, this Lyon-based artist can turn almost anything into a spectacle. By painting on the surface, the artist can turn random slabs of rocks into books and create adorable characters out of posts and mailboxes.

“I walk a lot, I see loads of things,” Cal said. “I love observing, looking at details. And I often notice that a specific stone, piece of pavement, tree, brick looks like something.”

Thankfully, the city of Lyon doesn’t run out of interesting things. The graffiti artist always finds inspiration everywhere. And in contrast to vandalism, what the artist does is more of a free art display than defacement of properties.

Most of the time, the artist goes back to see if the drawings are still there. According to the artist, some of the graffiti still remains even after several years.
