Fairly lightweight yet durable, resin has become a popular choice of material when making sculptures. In recent years, the use of resin has largely been developed and many sculptors have embraced this contemporary discipline. Ukrainian artist Yurii Myketka flawlessly merges traditional and contemporary techniques to create stunning wood and resin sculptures. With his sculptural pieces that are part-wood and part-resin, the harmony between classic and modern materials has never looked so perfect.

Dissimilar yet complementary, the wood looks stunning with the translucent epoxy resin. Most of Myketka’s wood and resin sculptures are inspired by sea creatures and birds. One of his most popular creations is the big wooden whale with epoxy resin. Its lower half is made up of acacia wood while the upper half is made of blue epoxy resin. So, it’s as if the wood part represents the sandy seabed while the blue translucent resin represents the sea.

The talented sculptor thinks that whales are the most majestic creatures on our planet. For him, the massive size and gracefulness of whales can inspire anyone to think and dream bigger. In addition to whales, Myketka also gets inspired by other animals such as birds and foxes. Just like whales, he finds these particular species beautiful and wild, making them the ideal subjects for his creations.

“The process of making my sculptures is changing with every new experience,” Myketka says. “There is of course a standard routine of woodcarving, but when you combine a nice piece of wood with colorful epoxy resin you have to use a lot of skills and imagination not to ruin a natural beauty of wood.”
