In October 2016, Los Angeles-based baker and event designer Alana Jones-Mann was commissioned to create a cake for a California wedding. The talented baker created three cakes, one of which was a textured buttercream cake that looked like a retro shag rug. While the other two cakes looked amazing, it seems it was the trippy shag cake that actually stole the show.
Alana posted a video of her buttercream shag cake on her Instagram page. As a result her followers went crazy. One of the commenters wrote that the shag rug cake is ‘the most incredible cake they’ve ever seen’. To create the now famous cake, Alana used muted versions of the wedding’s floral motifs. Through the use of a detailed piping technique, she was able to create psychedelic patterns reminiscent of a vintage groovy shag rug. The result was a one-of-a-kind cake that could double as a stunning work of art.
