The depiction of light and shadow is an essential technique used by many artists to create the illusion of a 3D space on a 2D painting or sketch. But Ukrainian artist and urban sketcher Nikita Busyak has a more impressive way to represent light on his architectural drawings. If you look at his sketches, you see the buildings glow with mysterious light that make the sketch pop off the page.

Busyak creates stunning architectural drawings using mechanical pen and ink. After finishing the sketch, he scans the drawing and digitally manipulates the image to achieve the glowing effect. He adds a golden yellow color to the windows and uses the feathering tool to soften the edges in order to achieve a realistic glowing effect. Then he cleverly makes use of glare placement around the illuminated windows to brilliantly render the reflection of light hitting the surface.

Aside from urban buildings, Busyak also features other structures such as a lonesome cabin in the woods, a remote motel, a lighthouse, and many others. After printing the final sketch, he photographs it in dim lighting to make the digital glow shine brighter. His series of glowing architectural drawings presents a mysterious yet spectacular light source within the structures that pulls you into the beauty of the night.
