Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw realistic objects like a pro? This South Korean art teacher will show you how you can improve your drawing skills through his series of structural drawings. While there are various techniques in creating realistic sketches, Jae Hyun made it easier to learn by demonstrating how to accurately depict the subject by initially focusing on its structure.

In structural drawing, you start by drawing the structure accurately. Each object has distinct form and unique shape. Hence, it is important to capture these precise characteristics to bring your two-dimensional drawings to life on paper. In order to give the subject a three-dimensional appearance, it requires the use of perspective to give the drawing a realistic impression of depth. The artist can achieve this by considering the width, height, and the observer’s angle of sight. Let’s take the Coca-Cola bottle drawing for example. An Jae Hyun used ellipse shapes to illustrate the structure of the bottle and the glass. The artist suggested to ‘pay attention to the change in the eye level of the ellipse’ to achieve the precise dimensions and angles.

After you’ve mastered making structural drawings, the next thing to grasp is how to cast shadows and light up subjects based on the direction and intensity of light. This include the proper use of shading and lines to achieve different brightness values, smooth edges, and flawless transitions.
