Have you been drooling over the embroidered brooches that are trending on Instagram and Pinterest? If you’re like us who woefully don’t have the crafting skills or just don’t have the spare time to practice embroidery, you can simply leave the task to the experts. And for all you bird lovers out there, you’ll absolutely love the works of Paulina Bartnik.

Just like the traditional ornamental jewelry item, embroidered brooches come in eclectic designs, patterns, and styles to add some oomph to any outfit. Poland-based embroidery artist Bartnik finds inspiration in birds and their fascinating diversity. Using needle and thread, she creates realistic portraits of birds with incredible details.

“I chose birds because of the beautiful colors, shapes, and texture of feathers,” Bartnik says. “To embroider them, I mainly use the needle painting technique, which I think perfectly imitates bird feathers.”

In needle painting, the needlework involves creating designs that look like paintings using a combination of short and long stitches on a closely woven fabric. So it’s basically painting using needle as the paintbrush and the thread as the paint. This hand embroidery technique is used to add volume and structure to an image in order to produce detailed works of art on fabric.

Portraits of hummingbirds, owls, crows, falcons, ravens, parrots, starlings, and more – her gorgeous embroidered brooches feature life-like quality and surface quality that shimmers in the lights like real bird feathers.
