For many artists, creating art is more than just a way of expressing themselves. It’s an integral part of their identity that keeps them going in life. This holds true for Kyiv-based artist Eugenia Zoloto, as she unceasingly pursues her passion for paper art amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Zoloto recalled the hardships that came with the outbreak of the war. As with every parent, she had to ensure her family’s safety, even if it meant taking a break from her craft.
“The first two weeks of the war affected me a lot. I couldn’t create because we had also moved to a quiet place near Kyiv in order to not hear and see the explosions (I have two kids), but then the sounds of explosions found us there too.”

Despite the commotions in the capital, many experts believe that it’s still “the most secure and safe place.” Following this recommendation, Zoloto and her family decided to return to Kyiv. Aside from being back at their hometown, for the paper artist, this also meant being reunited with her crafting materials. And so, she decided to continue what she does best.
“I felt so much mental suffering, so I decided to create more positive art. I want to believe this helps people focus on the victory and also that we will see that only kindness, only love helps us not to be stuck in war and hatred.”
