Artist Barbara Franc Creates Amazing Sculptures Of Animals From Discarded Objects

London-based artist Barbara Franc sculptor uses recycled materials including tin and copper to create unique scrap metal animal sculptures. Various artists and designers around the world are highlighting the essence of recycling into their practice by advocating recycled art. By using what seems to many as trash into splendid works of art, these creatives are able to reduce pollution caused by waste. The concept of recycling is fairly simple. When you reuse something old to create something new, it benefits the environment. Furthermore, one man’s trash can provide context to the works of some artists, transforming rubbish into spectacular artworks.

Inspired by the shapes and sculptural forms of animals, Franc brings a new beneficial aspect to her work by using discarded metal objects as her main material. Transforming scrap metals and bits of wire into elaborate scrap metal animal sculptures, she expresses her creativity while engaging with eco-friendly alternative through her craft. For her bird sculptures, she uses old colored tin cans for a wide range of plumage and twisted wire for the feet. Windscreen wiper blades turned into hare’s legs, an old colander for a rib cage, a draft stopper for a horse’s hogged mane; the possibilities are endless for Franc.

Franc collects her materials from hundreds of found objects on the streets, car boot sales, and charity shops. With scrap metals, she found the artistic freedom to offer up the pieces to the animal sculptures. The versatile material allows her to add changes during the construction to showcase the fluidity and diversity of the animal’s form and movement.

“Working with recycled and found objects makes me accept the individual qualities of the various materials they are made of, I have to adapt to them, not the other way round. It’s a bit like assembling a jigsaw with no picture and all the pieces keep changing shape before I can get them under some sort of control!”, she writes.
