Northumbrian Based Artists Create Adorable Woodland Creatures Using Felt

Animals have been a favorite muse among artists across all different genres. But no other art medium could capture the appearance and texture of furry and feathered animals than wool. Northumbria, UK-based creative duo Simon Brown and Katie Corrigan uses this versatile material to craft needle-felted sculptures of adorable forest animals. Whimsical renditions of foxes, rabbits, squirrels, owls, mice, and robins seem to come alive with their fuzzy form and texture.

Different from traditional knitting or crocheting, needle felting is the process of stabbing a barbed needle into wool to agitate the fibers so they bond together to form a solid fabric. The process is used to transform wool into 3D objects such as realistic-looking animals and fantastical creatures. We’ve seen the works of Yulia, Yvonne Herbst, and Erin Gardner featuring lifelike needle-felted woodland animals that are overwhelmingly cute. Brown and Corrigan take the same inspiration for their wool sculptures. But what makes their creations different is the addition of charming props to add liveliness to each delightful creatures.

Tiny birds perching on a snowy branch, a rabbit napping in a crescent moon, and a pair of foxes kissing on a grass-like bristles of a wooden brush – there seems to be an interesting story behind each piece. By incorporating found objects into the needle-felted sculptures, the creative duo not only adds charming touches but also introduces miniature wool figures which are increasingly illustrative in style.
