It’s no secret that LEGO is one of the most popular toys in the world. But did you know that there’s a LEGO Bridge in Wuppertal, Germany? LEGO has always been a part of everyone’s childhood. As grown-ups, there’s always something nostalgic and fascinating each time we see these iconic interlocking plastic bricks. But a certain street artist took his love for the toy to a whole new level when he was commissioned to repaint the Schwesterstraße Bridge.

In 2011, Martin Heuwold (aka Megx), a German graffiti and street artist, decided to breathe new life into one of the bridges along the Wuppertal Northern Railway. The railway line was decommissioned in 1991 and hasn’t been used since then. One of its beam bridges, the Schwesterstraße Bridge, is now for pedestrians and it is a public bicycle path. When Megx was commissioned to paint the underside of the bridge, the street artist knew he needed to make it as remarkable as possible. But it didn’t took him long to decide on the theme. He took inspiration from his two daughters’ love of LEGO. And his wife also encouraged him to pursue the LEGO project.

Before he could start the project, he first needed to get the approval of The LEGO Group. After getting permission from the toy company, Megx and his team began to paint giant multicolored cluster of interlocking plastic blocks on the underside of the bridge. It took them around 2 weeks to paint the 2,700-square-foot bridge. The use of 3D render and realistic shading makes the bridge appear as if it is actually made of the colorful bricks.

The new and colorful bridge officially known as Schwesterstraße Bridge. But most people around the world simply call it the LEGO Bridge. It has become one of the most eye-catching attractions in Wuppertal, giving Megx international recognition for his work. In fact, the amazing street art won the Deutscher Fassadenpreis Advancement Prize in 2012.
