London is famous for being constantly blanketed by gray skies. But one photographer, Bella Foxwell, is showing that the city is anything but dreary through her photo collection of the colorful front doors she comes across throughout the posh city.
Before Bella started documenting these eye-catching doorways, she “spent the previous year building the accounts of big consumer brands.” However, she felt the need to challenge herself. After consideration, she decided to work with doors. Bella said, “since I was already obsessed with doors, it felt like a natural fit as my ‘niche.'” So, in 2016, the Instagram account, thedoorsofldn, was born.
Bella’s fascination with doors stems from a few places. She said that she feels admiration towards “people who put so much pride into their front door.” Another reason why Bella feels drawn to doors is that they “are very symbolic.” According to her, they “represent new opportunities or they just remind you of home. There’s something special about them.”
Before Bella hits the streets with her camera, she goes on “Google Maps and looks at the street view to find out where to go.” Her spontaneous excursions have definitely attracted quite a lot of “doortrait” enthusiasts, as they call themselves; a combination of the words ‘door’ and ‘portrait.’ Currently, she has over 70,000 fans admiring her surreal portraits of colorful front doors.
“I usually do a little research into different locations first, and then head there with my phone to have a wander and see what I can find,” she said. “The best feeling is when you stumble across a street full of gorgeous doors that you never knew existed. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s very exciting.”
