The Animal Emergency Hospital & Urgent Care center in North Carolina has a very special 'nurse'. Cat Russel, who was badly burnt in a house fire a year ago and is still undergoing treatment. He has been caring for the other patients ever since he was well enough to, following his initial treatment. Russel is known at the center for going from room to room, visiting all the other animals as though to comfort them in their distress. "He wants to meet all our patients. He just wants to be with them," hospital staff told The Dodo. "I don't know if he can sense that other animals are in pain…but he does seem to have some weird knack for connecting with patients." Meet Russel, a puss who (just!) survived a house fire a year ago.
Russel is a permanent resident at the hospital. As he recovered, staff were astonished when he began caring for other patients.

"Most cats are independent and aloof, but he likes being with other animals."
"And it's not all about him. He really enjoys giving companionship to others."
Russel may never fully recover, but he has a good life at the clinic.
"He's a rock star here. Everyone wants to see him. We'd be happy to keep him as our clinic mascot."
