Pieces of wood that have been washed ashore by the wind and waves are often ignored and even considered a major nuisance in some waterfront areas. But artist Jeffro Uitto collects these pieces of wood and uses them to create astonishing driftwood animal sculptures. So, the creative artist doesn’t only create awe-inspiring works of art. He also gives nature’s remnants a second chance at life.

Driftwood has been Uitto’s favorite medium since high school. He usually takes a walk on the shores of Tokeland, Washington and picks up pieces of floating wood along the way. The varied pieces he collects are then cured before he turns them into stunning driftwood sculptures. Inspired by the beauty of animals and nature, he puts each fragment of wood in its fitting place, like putting together a puzzle. The result is a beautiful sculptural masterpiece that exudes the naturalistic spirit of the animal it depicts.

Life-size sculptures in the form of horses, lions, eagles, rhinos, and more; it’s like these animals are turned into wood by some kind of magic. Fortunately for Uitto, he resides in an ideal place that never runs out of driftwood that he can use.

“Hunting and finding wood is half the fun and a ton of work,” Uitto shares, “mostly in the winter when lots of rain and storms are pushing goodies out of the rivers. I love it more and more all the time. I grew up next to the ocean with the mountains nearby and never a shortage of inspiration and materials.”

He has a shop located near the historic Tokeland Hotel. Most of his driftwood animal sculptures end up displayed around the country once bought. He also accepts commissioned pieces with some clients bringing him on site to create one-off sculptures in various places.
