Wire art was introduced by American sculptor Alexander Calder in the 1920’s. The success of his steel wire sculptures inspired many artists to embrace the use of metal wires in their art.  Since then, many contemporary sculptors have been using wire as their main material in creating breathtakingly beautiful artworks. Richard Stainthorp, Darius Hulea and Nadia Zubareva are some of the modern sculptors who have chosen this unconventional material for their popular works.

More and more sculptors are diving into the wire art trend. But each has their own unique style and approach in rendering the material. British artist Martin Debenham applies both figurative and abstract art styles for his series of stunning wire sculptures. The artist welds each piece together from individual strands of wire. Then it is twisted, bent and assembled to form the subject. From human figures and animals to trees and abstract spheres, each sculptural masterpiece will allure your eyes with smooth, flowing details.

This talented self-taught artist has been making wire sculptures for years. And you can see his exceptional artistic skill coupled with years of experience in his creations. A remarkably capable material and easy to manipulate, wires have become an indispensable medium for many sculptors. Debenham uses wire that is thin enough for easy manipulation but thick enough to weld into place.

Most of Debenham’s creations are for outdoor display. One of his most popular works, Mermaid 3, has mesmerized viewers for its flowing form that follows the shape of a mermaid. This masterpiece was specifically created to be placed on a rock, preferably by a lily pond, to let the figure harmonize with the environment. So, it appears as if the mermaid, sitting on the rock, is gazing at the calm water.
