In the city that never sleeps, life can be hectic and sometimes a little gloomy. But two years ago, it began to show some color when bouquets of flowers mysteriously appeared all over NYC. And not just any flowers, but exquisite types at that. These beautiful flower arrangements can be seen in random trash cans, on bustling sidewalks and even on statues. But who was behind all of this? And why would someone buy expensive flowers, and arrange them in random places all over the city?

It turned out that the beautiful floral arrangements are a part of a guerilla campaign led by NYC-based floral designer Lewis Miller. The renowned designer was set on a mission to bring more color to the despondent city. The campaign was called Flower Flash and each installation features a different vibe – from romantic to whimsical themes. Heart-shaped bouquets adorning the sidewalks of public plazas and trash cans filled with flowers to make them appear like giant vases. As a result the vibrant colors boost and refresh city life.

“Gifting flowers to New Yorkers is a simple idea that I have been thinking about for years,” Lewis writes on his website. “I hoped for smiles, the ones that happen when you witness a random act of kindness. That was my goal, my vision. Create an emotional response through flowers.”

The flowers in each installation are not cheap. Roses, orchids, dahlias, tulips, lilies and other lavish blossoms are bundled in giant bouquets and lengthy garlands. The largest bouquets are can cost over $10,000. But why would Miller go to such lengths in spending thousands of dollars for this cause?

Miller revealed that the floral arrangements were previously used in events, since he is a well-known event designer. Instead of throwing them into the trash to rot, Miller thought of giving these flowers a second life. So, he placed the floral arrangements in public spaces because then the flowers don’t go to waste and they can cheer people up to.
