When you first look at these pieces by Patrick Kramer, you'd probably think that they're photographs, some of them more interesting than others. But, look closely and you'll notice that they're actually hyper-realistic oil paintings. Kramer builds up each of his works in thin layers of oil paint, and depending on size and detail, each one can take anywhere between one and six weeks to complete. The Utah-based painter says that he likes the way people react to his work once they realize what's going on.
"People will walk past a fairly banal hyper-realistic work, assuming it's a photograph, but when told it's a painting, will do a double-take. They'll go back and scrutinize, look for brush strokes, analyze the work in a way that would never occur with photography. The image hasn't changed, only the process behind the work, but it changes everything for the viewer."
