Photographer Robert Herman went out on the streets of New York every day between 1978 and 2005, and shot images of people and day to day life. The following photos were taken during the '70s and '80s and give some wonderful insight into what life was like for New York residents, away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. You also get a unique insight into the vibrant street culture that the city was (and still is, to some extent) famous for. If you want to see the full series of photos, you'll have to buy Herman's book The New Yorkers. However, there's a great selection here to get you started.
