There is something to be said for modern hygiene practices. Many diseases which arise from dirt are successfully controlled and the population in general is far healthier than it's ever been. Think about it, our not-so-lucky ancestors had to put up with public bathing… getting up close and personal with just anyone who walked in off the street, ew!
