Initially used in industry and boat building, resin has found its place in art as a medium. When mixed with a hardener, liquid resin gradually turns into solid plastic. And this ability allowed artists to create three-dimensional artworks, urging more artists to explore the beauty of epoxy resin art. Indeed, the application of resin is way beyond jewelries and furniture. Sydney-based artist Marie Antuanelle has been using this versatile material in creating 3D paintings that mostly depicts the pristine charm of the ocean.

To capture the sublimity of the ocean, Antuanelle incorporates a wide range of natural objects into her epoxy resin art. These include seashells, pearls, gemstones, and Swarovski crystals she has collected from various places. By employing a liquid material such as resin, she was able to perfectly portray the movement of the water. It’s as if you could hear the waves crashing against the white sand shore. Furthermore, the addition of actual objects such as pebbles and seashells gives the painting a more realistic look and feel.

Antuanelle’s Ocean Epoxy Resin Art isn’t just intended to please the eyes of viewers. More importantly, it’s a way to promote the importance of marine conservation. By capturing the untouched beauty of the ocean, the artist wished to convey the essence of nature conservation through her artworks. As to why she chooses resin as an art medium, she revealed that the fluidity of the material is reminiscent of a moving ocean.

“They are immediately responsive and live their own life –  they do not allow ‘do overs’. Just living in the present – here, now. There is nothing better than two-colored streams forming a waterfall over the edge of the canvas.” she writes.
