These stunning drip paintings show the beautiful end result when the seemingly incompatible blend well together. Urbanization plays multifaceted functions in all societies as cities contribute to sustainable economic growth and foster technological development which are necessary for improved standards of living. However, urban sprawl and industrial activities also magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as pollution, deforestation, habitat loss, and flash flooding. While contemporary architects are introducing the concept of vertical forests and green roofs that integrate buildings and trees, the future where all cities are transformed into ‘green cities’ is still looking bleak.

Canada-based artist Amy Shackleton imagines this future through her series of drip paintings that depict a wonderful world where cities are in tune with nature. Tall trees growing side by side with towering skyscrapers, elevated roads in the forest, and waterfalls over a bridge – each piece visualizes what happens when modern architecture merge with natural landscapes.

While her distinctive compositions are often created using acrylic on canvas, she brings nature back into the city without the use of a paintbrush. Instead, she uses squeeze bottles to pour paint onto the canvas. Then she lets gravity do its work by letting the paint flow down into straight lines of buildings and rotates the canvas to direct the flow of the paint to create shapes.
