Originally designed to track and upload fitness activity using GPS data, no one would’ve thought that Strava could be used as an unconventional art tool. Strava art has unleashed the artists in athletes and fitness enthusiasts, allowing them to create drawings with the help of the activity tracker. We’ve seen the artworks of Pete Stokes, Anthony Hoyte, and Stephen Lund. These cyclists have impressed the world with awesome images drawn using their bikes and the GPS tracking app. While these creative cyclists are nothing short of impressive, this runner from San Francisco, California is going to impress you more.

Lenny Maughan sets about running the streets of San Francisco to create jaw-dropping drawings using the Strava app. Known colloquially as the ‘Human Etch-A-Sketch’, his street masterpieces features various themes ranging from animals and celebrities to pop culture and everyday objects. But his most ambitious and most intricate piece so far is the ‘Tiger’. It features a fierce-looking tiger in splendid details drawn across the city of San Francisco.  Maughan took 4 days to complete the art, had to run 95 miles following a pre-drafted route via Strava, and burned almost 13,000 calories during the run.

The California runner picks the tiger as his subject for this piece as a commemoration of the 2022 Lunar New Year which was celebrated on the 1st of February. Based on the Chinese zodiac, the year 2022 marks the Year of the Tiger. Maughan began his Strava art featuring Chinese zodiac animals since the Lunar New Year of 2019. February that year, he made a drawing of a pig to celebrate the Year of the Pig.

Since then, he had made it a tradition to honor the Lunar New Year by making Strava art in the shape of the assigned zodiac animal of the year. So, we’ll be expecting to see an image of a rabbit in his piece for the next Lunar New Year. Aside from his zodiac animal drawings, he also picks inspiration from current events and festivities like the shamrock in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, a football to mark the Super Bowl, a lucky cat to greet the New Year, and many more.
