Life is a roller-coaster ride as it involves many emotional highs and lows. And when we’re getting through the lowest point in our lives, some good encouraging words could really make a huge difference. If you’re feeling down these days, you might want to read these uplifting four-panel comics illustrated by British cartoonist Hector Janse van Rensburg. His series of charming illustrations revolves around the warm companionship between a boy and his gray cat. The boy represents anyone of us during our hardest times  – anxious, despairing, hopeless.

Many of us can really relate to the boy particularly when nothing’s going our way or when we question our own existence. The boy in the comics is us – there’s no doubt about that. Now, this is where his loyal feline friend comes to the rescue. Like a supportive companion would, the cat would offer soothing words to comfort the troubled boy. And the cat would sometimes offer a positive perspective on the negative mindset that the boy often finds himself in. The boy, in one instance, was feeling down and worthless for not doing anything. But the consoling cat made him feel better by telling him that it’s okay because nothing should make a reason to make an enemy of oneself.

Van Rensburg revealed that the feline character was inspired by his own cat named Ona who passed away a couple of years ago. It was also Ona who inspired him to create inspiring comics to hearten the downhearted. He wanted to share the encouragement and positivity that Ona used to make him feel whenever he was feeling down and blue.

“Since starting the series, I have had so many messages from people about how they’ve helped them, or how they’ve sent the comics to people close to them and it has opened up a dialogue with them about things they struggle with, which is really great,” he explains.
