Following the successful birth of a child born to a Swedish woman who had undergone a womb transplant, the first 10 such transplants have been approved in the United Kingdom. The first of these are set to go ahead in 2016. Sadly, about 1 in 7000 women is born without a womb, others losing their uterus' for a variety of reasons. Now, it's going to be possible for women in this situation to go on a waiting list for a transplant.
The women, who will have been on a waiting list, will receive a womb from a patient who has been pronounced brain dead, but whose heart has continued to beat. This is known as a living donor. The organ would then be transported to the recipient who would undergo an operation taking about six hours. Following monitoring lasting approximately a year, doctors will implant an embryo into the womb, a combination of the woman's eggs and her partner's sperm. If successful, once a baby is born, the woman would have to have the womb removed. This is because whist a woman lives with a donated womb, they must stay on very strong immunosuppressive drugs. What a great development for both men and women!
