Turn Your Loved Ones Into Trees With These Organic Burial ‘Pods’


Regardless of our faith, returning to whence we came in an eco-friendly manner is an idea that appeals to a lot of us. Which is why Italian designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel have come up with a new way of burying people. The Capsula Mundi project is all about organic, biodegradable burial pods that turn the deceased's body into nutrients for a tree that will grow with help of their remains. The body is first encapsulated in the fetal position. After the deceased's capsule is buried, a tree or tree seed is planted above. The project's website already has several trees to choose from. Currently, this is still a concept as Italian law still forbids these types of burials. However, if it were to go ahead, the idea would be to have whole memorial parks full of trees, rather than tombstones:
