When you pick out ballpoint pens, the choice is generally between black and blue, sometimes with a cheeky red thrown in, so you might be surprised to learn that Marite Desaine's rainbow colored drawings are completed entirely using ballpoint pens. Desaine's work generally features strange and magical landscapes, but if you're a fan of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, you might recognize one or two of the characters in some of these pieces. These stunning drawings have an ethereal feel to them, accentuated by the multitude of colorful pen strokes. It's not easy drawing in this uniquely magical style, though. It takes Desaine about 30 hours to complete each drawing!
