Domestication has led to animals forging a close bond with humans. But animals can be more than just man’s best friend. They can also get along with other animals of different species as can be seen from these photos of animal friendships. Cats and dogs with a reputation of being sworn enemies have proven that they can be best buddies. You don’t believe us? Let our previous post about a husky and a kitten becoming best friends prove our point. Or this post about a Shar Pei dog and a cat being inseparable.
Cats and dogs aren’t the only animals that can forge a bond. It can develop between an elephant and an ostrich, a chimpanzee and a tiger, a goat and a sheep, a duck and a pig and more. True friendship knows no species. Domestication plays a vital role in promoting interspecies friendship. However, there have been numerous cases of an unusual bond forming in wild animals as can be seen from several photos and videos.
Unusual Animal Friendships Between Two Different Species
Animal friendships can be initially traced back to mutualism where two different organisms of different species interact with each other because they both benefit from it. Oxpeckers, for example, are often seen sitting on grazing mammals such as impalas and giraffes.
These large mammals would let these tiny birds loaf around on their backs like they were besties. But there’s actually more to their friendship than just giving these birds a free ride. In fact, oxpeckers are feeding on ticks, fleas, lice and other bugs that can cause irritation and disease to grazing mammals. Furthermore, these birds also alert the large mammals of a predator presence by giving a loud warning call.

Household pets, on the other hand, form a close bond simply because they’re living under the same roof. Friendships in domestic pets don’t necessarily start with a mutual relationship where both parties can benefit from each other.
They eventually become attached to each other simply because they belong to one family. Hence, having a harmonious relationship within the family comes first before anything else. And they were able to brush aside their differences and wild instincts to embrace each other as member of the family.
